Summer sun may be fun, but it can wreak havoc on your skin. The much sought-after and highly desirous healthy glow proves to be not so healthy after all. It should come as no surprise that environmental factors like UV rays and free radicals are highly damaging to the skin.

What is a sun lover to do? At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery, we understand that avoiding the sun entirely is nearly impossible—especially here in Augusta. Besides, we too love warm weather and long summer days. When it comes to summer skin, protection is key. With the right skincare regimen, damage from UV radiation is preventable.

Why Sun Protection Is Important

It is estimated that 90 percent of visible aging is caused by environmental damage. UVA and UVB rays are responsible for:

  • Breaking down collagen—weakening and thinning skin
  • Causing photoaging, the skin appears aged and wrinkled
  • The creation of dark spots and uneven pigmentation
  • Sunburn

Harmful to more than a radiant complexion, UV damage is a risk to you and your skin’s health. Over-exposure is accountable for the development of precancerous and cancerous cells. In fact, nearly 86 percent of all new melanoma cases are attributed to exposure to the sun.

Wear Your Sunscreen

Blocking more than the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation, sunscreen protects your skin from free-radicals and environmental pollution. Protect yourself by applying a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every morning. Reapplication is important too—especially for the days spent in the sun.

Obagi® has dedicated a number of its products to sun protection. One of our favorites, Obagi’s Professional-C™ Suncare. With broad spectrum SPF 30 protection, the Vitamin-C laden formula fades signs of aging while also helping to brighten the skin. One study shows that 72 percent of users felt that their skin was protected all day.
