How Can Rhinoplasty Improve My Appearance?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects humps, bumps, and other issues that affect your appearance. The nose is the most prominent structure on your face, so any issues detract from your eyes, smile, and other features. Bone and cartilage inside your nose give it shape and influences the symmetry of your face. Ideally, your nose should work in harmony with other areas of your face. Unfortunately, this means that even the smallest flaws have a significant impact on how you look. Dr. Medina uses rhinoplasty to soften the shape of the nose and reduce any issues that make it more prominent that other features.

Who Can Benefit from Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Medina recommends rhinoplasty for men and women who are unhappy with the shape and size of their noses. This includes minor flaws, such as a hump, or more dominant issues, such as a nose that is too sharp for the face.

What Happens During the Rhinoplasty Procedure?

Rhinoplasty improves your appearance my removing, reducing, and reshaping the bone and cartilage inside your nose. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. Dr. Medina may recommend open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, or secondary rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is typically the best technique for procedures that require more extensive modifications to the interior of the nose. Incisions are made in the small area of skin between your nostrils, and Dr. Medina lifts the skin and tissue over the nose.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Medina recommends closed rhinoplasty for patients who only need a small amount of correction to the nose. For this technique, incisions are made inside your nose to access the bone and cartilage.

Secondary Rhinoplasty

Secondary rhinoplasty is performed after an initial nose surgery. It can be performed using the open or closed technique. Patients may need secondary rhinoplasty after nose trauma or a failed primary nose surgery.

What Can I Expect After Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty does require some downtime and healing. Expect your nose and eye area to be swollen. You may also have some bruising under your eyes. Your nose is wrapped in a splint that holds the tissues in place. You’ll need to avoid blowing your nose for a period of time. Discomfort is also normal, and it may be managed with prescription or non-prescription medications.

Non-dissolvable sutures are removed after seven to 10 days. Swelling and bruising gradually subsides over the next few weeks after the surgery. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activities until your nose is completely healed.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

Is rhinoplasty painful?

There is some discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery, but it can be managed with non-prescription or prescription pain medications. Following the aftercare closely reduces the likelihood of swelling and discomfort.

How long does rhinoplasty last?

Rhinoplasty permanently changes the interior structure of your nose. If you suffer trauma to your nose, it may affect the shape of your nose. In these cases, Dr. Medina may recommend secondary rhinoplasty.

Does a nose job leave scars?

Any type of surgery causes scars because the incisions are wounds in the skin. A skilled cosmetic surgeon makes the incisions in locations that hide the scars. Additionally, as an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Medina is adept with making incisions in a way that minimizes scarring.

Is filler rhinoplasty as effective as surgical rhinoplasty?

Filler rhinoplasty is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses dermal fillers to make small changes to the nose shape. Although it can help with dimples and a narrow nose shape, it is not as effective as surgical rhinoplasty. Filler rhinoplasty is short-term, and you will need follow-up treatments every few months or years. Additionally, using dermal filler to change your nose may produce inconsistent or undesirable results.
