Contouring, not weight loss.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Troy Austin, MD — double board-certified plastic surgeon ◆ Updated July 2026

Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure that permanently removes stubborn, diet- and exercise-resistant fat from targeted areas to refine your shape. It’s one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world — but it is not a weight-loss treatment. It’s for the pockets of fat that won’t respond to the gym, in patients who are already near their goal weight. At Southeastern Aesthetic Surgery in Augusta, GA, Dr. Karen Szymanski, our preferred surgeon for liposuction, performs it (including 360° body contouring) to sculpt the abdomen, waist, and beyond, and Dr. Troy Austin performs it as well.

Your surgeon

The surgeon over the machine.

You’ll see liposuction sold by its technology — laser this, ultrasound that. The truth is simpler: the result depends on the surgeon’s judgment and hands far more than the device. With Dr. Austin, the surgeon who plans your contouring is the one who performs it, and he chooses the technique that fits your body rather than whatever a clinic happens to market.

He is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, completed his plastic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia, and trained in general surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

Liposuction looks simple from the outside. Doing it well — smooth, even, natural — is where training and experience actually show. Dr. Troy Austin

Is it right for you?

For stubborn fat — not the scale.

The best candidates are already near their goal weight, in good health, and bothered by specific pockets of fat that won’t go away no matter how clean they eat or how hard they train — a lower belly, love handles, a double chin, inner thighs, or arms. Liposuction removes those fat cells for good. It isn’t a shortcut for weight loss, and it won’t tighten loose skin — but for diet-resistant fat on the right patient, nothing else compares. Dr. Austin will tell you honestly if you’re a fit.

Compare your options

Lipo, non-surgical, or a lift?

Fat, loose skin, and a little of both call for different tools. Here’s how liposuction compares to the alternatives we also offer.

We also offer non-surgical body contouring, BodyTite skin tightening, and tummy tuck — so the recommendation is always the one that fits you, not the only thing on the menu.

The procedure

How liposuction actually works.

Through tiny incisions, a thin tube called a cannula loosens and suctions out fat, sculpting the area to a smoother contour.

Anesthesia & time

Most liposuction is done under general anesthesia or IV sedation as an outpatient procedure, taking one to three hours depending on how many areas are treated. You go home the same day in a compression garment.

The techniques — honestly

You’ll hear a lot of brand names. Here’s the plain version:

  • Tumescent liposuction — the proven standard: numbing fluid shrinks vessels and eases fat removal.
  • Laser-assisted (SmartLipo) & ultrasound (VASER) — energy melts or loosens fat first; useful in the right case, not magic.
  • Power-assisted (PAL) — a vibrating cannula removes fat more efficiently.

Dr. Austin selects what suits your anatomy — not whatever a clinic is advertising this month.

360° contouring & combinations

For a fully sculpted midsection, 360° liposuction treats the abdomen, waist, and back in one session. Liposuction also pairs beautifully with a tummy tuck, mommy makeover, or BBL, where your own fat is transferred to add shape.

Fat, not skin

An honest point most ads skip: liposuction removes fat, it doesn’t tighten loose skin. If skin laxity is a factor, Dr. Austin may recommend BodyTite or a lift for the result you actually want.

The machine doesn’t do the work. Technique matters, but the surgeon’s eye and hands determine whether a result is smooth and natural.

Areas we treat

From double chin to thighs.

Liposuction can refine almost any area where stubborn fat collects. The most requested at our Augusta practice:

Chin & neck

Chin (submental) liposuction sharpens the jawline and softens a “double chin” — one of our most popular, lowest-downtime treatments.

Arms

Arm liposuction slims the upper arms when the issue is fat rather than loose skin.

Abdomen & waist (360°)

The classic area — the belly, waist, and love handles, treated all the way around for a sculpted midsection.

Back & bra roll

Smooths the upper back and the roll that sits above and below the bra line.

Hips, thighs & knees

Outer thighs (saddlebags), inner thighs, hips, and even stubborn fat around the knees.

If loose skin is the real issue in any of these areas, an arm lift, thigh lift, or body lift may serve you better — and Dr. Austin will say so.

Chin & neck lipo.

One of the quickest, highest-impact areas — a sharper jawline with minimal downtime.

Investment

How much does liposuction cost in Augusta?

Liposuction is priced by the number and size of areas treated. In the Augusta area it typically starts around $3,800 for a single area, with multiple-area and 360° plans ranging higher. Your exact, all-in price is confirmed in writing at your consultation.

Liposuction — one area $3,800+
Each additional area $1,500 – $3,000
Chin & neck (submental) $3,000 – $5,000
360° / multiple-area contouring $8,000 – $15,000
Consultation with Dr. Austin $100

Every quote is individualized and depends on the areas treated and the technique used. Your exact price — including anesthesia and the surgery center — is confirmed in writing after your consultation. Financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, PatientFi, and Alle Financing, so you can spread the cost over time.

Candidacy, recovery & results

What to expect, start to finish.

Are you a candidate?

Ideal candidates are close to their goal weight, don’t smoke, have reasonably firm skin, and want to remove specific pockets of fat — not to lose weight overall. If your main concern is loose skin or a large amount of weight, Dr. Austin will point you to the procedure that actually fits.

Recovery

  • Days 1–3: soreness and swelling, managed with medication; you’ll wear a compression garment.
  • Days 3–7: many return to desk work; keep moving gently.
  • Weeks 2–6: compression continues; you ease back into exercise as cleared.
  • Months 2–3: swelling resolves and your true contour appears.

Are results permanent?

Yes — the fat cells removed are gone for good. But liposuction doesn’t stop future weight gain: if you gain, the remaining fat cells can still enlarge. With a stable weight, your new contour lasts. Most patients see their final result within two to three months.

Not a weight-loss tool. Most patients lose only a few pounds — the change you see is in your shape, not the scale.

Good to know

Liposuction Questions.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure that permanently removes stubborn, diet- and exercise-resistant fat from targeted areas through small incisions, using a thin tube called a cannula. It refines your shape but is not a weight-loss treatment — it’s for specific pockets of fat in patients already near their goal weight.

No. Liposuction contours the body by removing localized fat; it is not a treatment for weight loss or obesity. Most patients lose only a few pounds — the change you notice is in your shape, not the number on the scale. The best candidates are already close to their goal weight.

It’s priced by the number and size of areas treated. In the Augusta area it typically starts around $3,800 for a single area, with each additional area adding to the total and 360° or multiple-area plans ranging higher. Your written quote — including anesthesia and facility — is confirmed at consultation, and financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, PatientFi, and Alle Financing.

Common areas include the chin and neck (submental), arms, abdomen and waist (including 360°), flanks or “love handles,” back and bra roll, hips, inner and outer thighs, and knees. If loose skin is the real concern in an area, a lift may be the better option.

Traditional tumescent liposuction is the proven standard. Laser-assisted (SmartLipo) and ultrasound (VASER) use energy to loosen or melt fat first, which can help in certain cases; power-assisted (PAL) uses a vibrating cannula. No single technology is “best” for everyone — the surgeon’s skill matters more than the device. Dr. Austin selects the approach that fits your anatomy.

Surgical liposuction removes significantly more fat in a single procedure with a lasting, sculpted result; non-surgical options like CoolSculpting reduce a modest amount of fat gradually over several sessions with no downtime. Liposuction is better for meaningful contouring; non-surgical may suit very mild fat when downtime isn’t an option. We offer both and will recommend the right one for you.

Liposuction removes fat but does not tighten skin. Patients with good skin elasticity typically see the skin retract nicely. If skin laxity is a concern, Dr. Austin may recommend adding BodyTite (energy-assisted tightening) or a lift for the best result.

The fat cells removed are gone permanently. However, liposuction doesn’t prevent future weight gain — if you gain weight, the remaining fat cells can enlarge, including in treated areas. Maintaining a stable weight keeps your results looking their best.

Expect soreness and swelling for the first few days, managed with medication and a compression garment. Many return to desk work within a week, ease back into exercise over the following weeks, and see their final contour as swelling resolves at two to three months.
