When the goal is purely appearance — a scar that’s visible, wide, or discolored — the procedure is considered cosmetic and generally isn’t covered by insurance.

Functional & medically necessary

When a scar restricts movement or results from a burn, trauma, or prior surgery, revision may be considered functional or medically necessary. We don’t accept or bill insurance directly, but for functional cases we provide the billing codes you need to file a claim with your insurer for possible reimbursement after your procedure, and we offer third-party financing to cover the cost up front. Injections and non-surgical options usually involve little to no downtime — you return to normal activity quickly, often over a short series of visits.

After a surgical revision

Expect some swelling, bruising, and a fresh incision to care for. Most people return to routine activities within one to two weeks, following aftercare to protect the result.

The most important part: time

  • A revised scar looks its worst early — new incisions are red or firm at first.
  • Scars mature over many months, gradually fading and softening.
  • Final results are best judged around a year out, not in the first few weeks.

Sun protection, silicone or topical care, and following your plan all help you get the most from your revision.

No — once skin is injured, some scar will always remain. Anyone promising to erase a scar entirely isn’t being straight with you. What scar revision can do is make a scar significantly less noticeable and, where needed, restore movement. The goal is meaningful, lasting improvement.

Keloids, hypertrophic (raised) scars, surgical and C-section scars, burn and contracture scars that limit movement, and acne or depressed scars. Each type is approached differently, and Dr. Austin identifies yours and recommends the right method at your consultation.

Options include steroid or related injections, surgical excision with refined low-tension closure, z-plasty and other tension-relieving techniques, skin grafts or local flaps for large or contracted scars, and laser or resurfacing for texture and color. Often a combination works best.
