Technique & scars

Where the scar goes — honestly.

Unlike an implant, a breast lift trades a small, well-placed scar for a lasting change in shape. Dr. Austin chooses the least-scarring technique that will actually achieve your result — and tells you plainly what to expect. Scars fade over months and are placed where a bra or swimsuit hides them.

Crescent

A small incision along the top of the areola, used only for very mild lifting — often alongside an implant. The least scarring, but limited in what it can raise.

Periareolar — the “donut” lift

A circular incision hidden at the edge of the areola. It suits mild sagging, can reduce areola size, and leaves a discreet scar that follows the natural color change of the areola.

Vertical — the “lollipop” lift

An incision around the areola and straight down to the crease. The most common breast lift because it removes more loose skin and reshapes moderate to significant sagging — with a scar that stays off the visible upper breast.

Anchor — the inverted-T lift

Adds a short incision along the breast crease for the most extensive lifting, ideal after major weight loss or pregnancy. It removes the most excess skin and gives the most dramatic reshaping when a smaller incision simply can’t.

Least scar, real result. Dr. Austin recommends the smallest incision that will genuinely hold your lift — never a bigger scar than your anatomy needs.

What to expect — honestly.

Beyond the numbers above, the questions patients ask most are simple: Am I a good candidate, and what is recovery really like? Here is the honest answer to both.

Are you a candidate?

You may be an excellent candidate if your breasts sag — nipples sitting at or below the breast crease — after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or simply age and gravity. Good candidates are in general good health, are nicotine-free for several weeks around surgery (this matters more for a lift than almost any other procedure, because nicotine impairs skin healing), and have realistic expectations. If you’ve also lost volume, Dr. Austin may recommend adding an implant; if your breasts are heavy and uncomfortable, he may discuss a reduction. He’ll tell you honestly which path fits.

Your recovery, week by week

  • Days 1–2: rest with tightness and swelling, well managed with medication; most patients shower the next day.
  • Days 3–7: many return to desk work and light activity in a supportive surgical bra.
  • Weeks 2–4: swelling settles and the breasts begin to soften into their new shape.
  • Weeks 4–6: most return to full activity and exercise; scars begin their months-long fade.

Is there a non-surgical breast lift?

Skin-tightening and energy treatments can modestly firm the skin, but no non-surgical treatment can raise the nipple or remove significant excess skin the way a mastopexy does.
