What is an IPL Laser treatment?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light, an advanced treatment technology used in various skin treatments, including hair removal and photofacials. These treatments may also be referred to as laser skin rejuvenation, photorejuvenation, or laser skin resurfacing.
What does the IPL Laser treat?
There are many applications for IPL laser treatments, but it is most often used to eliminate mild sun damage, freckles, irregular pigmentation, sun spots, and light brown spots on the face, neck, and chest. IPL may also be used to treat fine wrinkles, large pores, rosacea and dilated capillaries.
How does IPL Laser treatment work?
A handheld flashgun is passed across the skin, delivering a spectral range of light that targets the hair or skin issue. IPL uses quick and powerful flashes of light to gently penetrate melanin (brown pigment) below the skin's surface. The pulsing heat breaks down this pigment into tiny particles, and these will then rise to the skin's surface, producing scabs that will naturally peel away within a week or so, or they will be eliminated by the body's lymphatic system.
Is there any downtime after IPL laser treatment?
There is no downtime because IPL works without deep resurfacing, all it really produces is some minor redness. Some achieve complete results after only one session, but most will require three to five sessions, one month apart, with maintenance treatments twice a year.
Who is an ideal candidate for an IPL Laser treatment?
IPL is ideal for younger patients who are beginning to see minor wrinkling or uneven skin tone, and for those wanting to treat freckles or sunspots. If you have naturally tanned or dark skin, Dr. Austin may recommend an alternate treatment.
How is the IPL Laser treatment performed?
Treatment with the IPL laser takes about 20 minutes to run the device over your entire face, working inch by inch and in quadrants to effectively treat every area evenly. Patients may experience a stinging or burning sensation during the procedure, but there is usually no discomfort afterwards. You will be able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
