Labiaplasty is a safe and effective procedure for women struggling with the length of their labia minora. This popular procedure is designed to relieve symptoms that may occur from twisting or tugging on the elongated labia. Led by our skilled surgeons include board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Troy Austin, provide labiaplasty for women in Augusta, Evans, Columbia County, and nearby areas in Georgia. We are also happy to provide our services to residents of Aiken and the neighboring communities in South Carolina.
What is Labiaplasty?
As women age, many experience a lengthening of the labia minora, or inner lips of the vulva. This can be the result of childbirth or a variety of other causes. However, regardless of the reason, an elongated labia can cause physical and emotional distress for many women. Labiaplasty seeks to reduce this distress by shortening the labia minora, so that it is once again shorter than the labia majora, or outer lips of the vulva.
What are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?
There are several benefits of labiaplasty. For some, labiaplasty can help reduce discomfort while exercising, riding a bike, or engaging in sex. For others, it can help reduce itching, irritation or self-consciousness that may arise from having an elongated labia minora. Although labia size and shape is highly individual, if the length of your labia is having a negative impact on your physical or emotional state, labiaplasty could be right for you.
What Happens During a Labiaplasty Procedure?
Your labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation or general anesthesia. During a trim procedure, the excess tissue will be removed and closed with absorbable sutures. A wedge procedure will remove only a pie-shaped piece of tissue, leaving the natural border intact. The details of your specific procedure can be discussed with Dr. Dr. Austin during your consultation.
What Should I Expect During Recovery?
Although the recovery process will vary depending on the individual, in general, our patients can expect to take at least one week off of work. During this time, you will receive specific instructions for how to help reduce swelling and aid in the healing process. After four to six weeks, many patients are able to resume wearing tampons and engaging in sexual intercourse. The majority of your swelling should be gone within six weeks, but it can take as long as six months for all residual swelling to dissipate.
Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
If you are experiencing physical or emotional distress as a result of an elongated labia minora, then you could be a good candidate for labiaplasty. However, the best way to determine your candidacy is to schedule a consultation. During your appointment, you will be able to speak with Dr. Austin directly about your concerns and create a plan that is uniquely tailored to your needs. Pricing and payment options will also be discussed during this time.
