What is the Science behind Restylane®?
The Restylane® (formerly Perlane®) product line is a series of FDA-approved dermal filler formulas that use hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring substance in the body that helps skin cells absorb and retain moisture to keep skin hydrated and smooth. The body naturally produces less HA as we get older, causing skin to lose its natural moisture and volume, resulting in lines, wrinkles, creases, and folds. Restylane® delivers HA directly to cells beneath the skin’s surface to increase and maintain healthy hydration at the sub-dermal level, supporting the skin’s cellular structure. HA also produces continued hydration in skin cells that causes lines, creases, wrinkles, and folds in the treatment area to continue to fade away gradually over several weeks.
How is the HA in Restylane® obtained?
Restylane® gel is formulated using only all-natural plant-sourced hyaluronic acid (HA) that is biocompatible with the human body, reducing the potential risk of allergic reaction or rejection by the body.
What conditions is Restylane® recommended for?
Restylane® is an ideal treatment for most healthy adults who want to treat any of the following conditions:
- Crow’s feet
- Flat, thin, and brittle lips
- Frown lines
- Laugh lines
- Marionette lines around the chin
- Sunken cheekbones and loss of definition in the cheeks
- Sagging skin and jowls along the chin and jawline
- Vertical smoker’s lines around the lips
- Wrinkles and sagging skin around the eyes
Should I prepare in advance for a Restylane® treatment?
While there is very little risk of having an adverse reaction with Restylane®, Dr. Austin will want to know any history of allergies you may have, as well as other medical conditions, other injections you may have received recently and any medications you may be taking. We advise postponing Restylane® treatments if you have any skin infection, inflammation, acne, rashes, or other irritation until the condition subsides.
Does it hurt to get Restylane® injections?
We normally apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment area to prevent any patient discomfort during treatment. The Restylane® gel is administered using a very fine needle. Most patients do not consider the procedure painful, and you will be able to resume normal physical activities immediately following treatment.
What can I expect from Restylane® results?
One Restylane® treatment is sufficient to produce dramatic results that last about a year in most patients, and there is no downtime when Restylane® is administered as a stand-alone treatment.
