An ever popular procedure, breast augmentation continues to top the charts amongst cosmetic surgical procedures. In 2014, over 286,000 women underwent a breast augmentation.  Along with these numbers comes a considerable amount of misinformation. Here we try to address 4 common myths that many have concerning breast augmentation.

4 Common Myths

Myth: There is only one ‘best way’ approach.

There is no such thing as a ‘best way’. Each woman’s body is unique and requires a personalized approach. Working with Dr. Austin, you will consider factors such as:

  • Size of the Implant
  • Type of Implant
  • Placement of Implant
  • Surgical Entry Point

Creating a surgical approach that fits and meets your goals and expectations as well as your figure is key to the success of your breast augmentation.

Myth: As a common procedure, any surgeon can adequately perform breast augmentation.

Just because augmentation is one of the more popular choices in plastic surgery does not make it an easy procedure that any doctor should undertake. Dr. Austin is Board Certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a proud member of both The American Society of Plastic Surgery and The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.   Breast Augmentation continues to be one of Dr. Austin’s most commonly performed procedures.  His knowledge and experience help to ensure a successful and safe augmentation.

Myth: Cup size is a good measurement of breast size.

While it may be easy to say ‘I want to be a D cup’, measuring cup size is not an accurate way to measure breast size.  On the contrary, cup size is not a set value and is largely arbitrary—often dependent on the manufacturer and can change from brand to brand.  Cup size also fails to take into consideration shape and contours—two important factors when deciding on the size of your implant.

Instead of requesting a cup size, Dr. Austin recommends using a combination of body measurements and before and after photos of someone with a similar body type and breast shape. Things to pay attention to are: height, weight, chest width, and breast size.  Dr. Austin’s expertise will prove invaluable as he helps you make a decision on implant size.

Myth: Breast augmentation can ‘boost’ the bosom.

Using an implant increases the breast’s volume by augmenting the existing breast and not necessarily lifting it higher on the chest.  Named accordingly, a breast lift is the only way to ‘lift’ the breast into a higher position. Do you need a breast lift?   In order to answer this question, Dr. Austin suggests you look at the relationship of the nipple to the fold underneath the breast.  When the nipple lies below the fold, a breast lift along with a breast implant may be necessary to achieve your desired result.  Dr. Austin can help you decide whether or not you would benefit from a breast lift.
